The Chemistry of Holiday Decorations
December 20, 2024
This Holiday season, if you’ve decked out your tree with tinsel, you’re part of a shiny tradition that has chemistry to thank!
Originally made in Germany from expensive silver, tinsel was all about that festive sparkle– but not everyone could afford it. People turned to metals like copper and aluminum for a more budget-friendly shine.
During World War II, metal shortages led tinsel makers to investigate other options, and thankfully in the 1970s, chemistry saved the day with PVC as the base for tinsel and shiny metals like aluminum for that festive sparkle.
All of us at Team Chemistry hope our advocates have a safe and happy holiday season!
