Chemistry is Vital to American Agriculture

Chemistry is vital in many industries such as national defense, infrastructure, and energy efficiency. Did you know that chemistry is also necessary to the backbone of our country, agriculture? Next time you’re driving by or on a farm, think of how chemistry is at work!

Everything—from fertilizer to pesticides to greenhouse panels—is made possible from chemical manufacturing. Here are some everyday examples:

  • Formaldehyde is used in pork and poultry production to prevent disease and infection
  • Methylene chloride is used to produce polycarbonate found in greenhouse panels and walls.
  • Acrylonitrile is used to create ABS which is found in plant and seedling/nursery trays and greenhouse tapes.

Science-based policies are needed to protect American innovation and ensure chemical production is happening in the United States. Without chemistry-based agriculture solutions, America will lose its place as the world’s manufacturing superpower.

The NO IRIS Act, which would protect American agriculture by ensuring regulations on farming inputs are based on sound science, was just re-introduced in Congress by Senator Kennedy and Congressman Grothman. Last Congress, 53 organizations signed a letter of support for this legislation. Read more about this exciting legislation.
