Alaska Lawmakers, Oppose HB 25!

HB 25 is a proposed law that would ban restaurants from using PS food containers starting January 1, 2026. It also stops the state from buying or using these containers.

While we support reducing plastic waste, we believe HB 25 is not the right solution. Here’s why:

  • Waste Disposal: Banning one type of packaging doesn’t reduce the amount of waste; it just changes what kind of waste we have. For example, replacing plastic with heavier materials like glass or metal could lead to more waste in landfills.
  • Higher Costs for Restaurants: Restaurants might have to spend more on alternative packaging that may not work as well, especially for hot or cold foods. This could hurt small businesses already struggling to make ends meet.
  • Unclear Exemptions: The bill doesn’t clearly explain how restaurants can apply for exemptions if they face financial or logistical hardships.
  • Increased State Costs: Switching from polystyrene to other materials could cost the state more money, affecting schools and programs for seniors.

Instead of banning polystyrene, we should focus on improving recycling and composting systems. We need to understand what materials are being collected, how they are processed, and how we can increase recycling rates for all types of packaging.

Producers have worked on recycling laws in several states to reduce waste and improve recycling. States like Hawaii plan to do studies to guide future policies, and answer important questions like:

  • What materials are being recycled or composted?
  • Who has access to recycling and composting services?
  • How can these services be improved?

We encourage lawmakers to oppose HB 25 and consider more effective solutions to reduce plastic waste and improve recycling. We can find better ways to protect our environment and support our businesses. Let’s work together for a sustainable future for Alaska.
